En Afrique subsaharienne, être initié signifie tout d'abord que l'on a suivi, sur une longue période et dans des conditions éprouvantes, un enseignement spécifique réservé à une catégorie d'individus. Ensuite, certaines règles de comportement propres au groupe dont on est issu sont partagées avec d'autres personnes, le plus souvent du même âge, du même sexe. Cet ouvrage, qui regroupe des textes d'historiens de l'art, d'ethnologues et d'anthropologues, révèle comment et pourquoi nombre de pratiques rituelles du bassin du Congo sont liées à une grande diversité d'objets : masques, statuettes, insignes, parures, instruments de musique ... Les oeuvres reproduites ici proviennent majoritairement du Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale de Tervuren ainsi que du musée Dapper, de collections publiques (Museum aan de Stroom d'Anvers, Wereldmuseum de Rotterdam) et privées. Les rites étudiés dans ce livre relèvent des deux types d'initiations les plus courants. Le premier est l'apprentissage qui prépare les adolescents à devenir adultes ; pour les garçons il s'accompagne fréquemment de la circoncision et pour les filles parfois de l'excision. Le second, généralement moins souvent évoqué, est la formation que reçoivent, au sein de sociétés secrètes ou de confréries, les devins, les thérapeutes et autres spécialistes des cultes, mais aussi les souverains et les chefs. Les connaissances permettant d'exercer le pouvoir, d'agir sur les autres s'acquièrent parfois durant toute une vie. Aujourd'hui, les rites initiatiques, lorsqu'ils n'ont pas disparu, voient leur sens et leur contenu évoluer en fonction du monde moderne. La démarche de l'artiste béninois Romuald Hazoumè est marquée par son vécu d'initié. Ses oeuvres, réalisées principalement à partir de bidons d'essence, jouent de la provocation et de la dérision. Elles constituent les outils d'une critique acerbe de l'Occident et interrogent le devenir des sociétés du continent africain.
